Romana Sammern is an art historian and researches and teaches on the interface between body, image and medicine in the early modern period. She completed her studies of history, cultural studies and art history in Salzburg, Vienna and Berlin with a thesis on the history of migration on the factory settlement in Lend in the Pinzgau region of Salzburg. From 2006 to 2007 she was a junior fellow at the International Research Center for Cultural Studies in Vienna, and from 2007 to 2011 she was a research assistant in the photo library of the Art History Institute in Florence – Max Planck Institute. In 2011 she did her doctorate at the Humboldt University in Berlin on the pictorial representation of prostitutes in the 17th and 18th centuries (published as "Hurenbilder", Böhlau 2014). In 2012-2013 she worked on her project on “Original/Kopie. History and Genesis of Dualism, 1500–1750" at the Art History Institute in Florence - Max Planck Institute. In the Herta Firnberg Program of the FWF, she investigated 2013-2018 at the Art History Department of PLUS with her project "Face and Image". Interrelationship between art and cosmetics at the interface of art studies and the history of science. She will continue this project in the Elise Richter Program of the FWF in 2021. Since 2019 she has also been the scientific program coordinator of the program area "Figurations of Transition" of the inter-university institution Science & Art between University of Salzburg and University Mozarteum Salzburg.
