Maria Walcher (* 1984, grew up in Brixen) studied Public Art and New Artistic Strategies at the M.F.A. (Bauhaus University Weimar) and at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (art and communicative practice; design, architecture and environment for art teachers; textile - free, applied and experimental design). She has been working as a freelance artist since 2011, currently lives in Innsbruck and teaches art practice in the field of sculpture in the Department of Fine Arts and Design at the University of Salzburg (location Innsbruck). In addition to working as a freelance artist, she works repeatedly with adults, young people and children in the field of art education and art education in workshops and courses in various contexts (e.g. in the Museion Bozen, the art and architecture school in Innsbruck or in school).  

Maria Walcher often addresses social-political issues in her artistic work. Transdisciplinary collaborations, site-specific installations and interventions in public spaces play an important role, e.g. in the projects "Trasite", Weimar 2014, "Lethe", Innsbruck 2017 or "querSCHNITT", South Tyrol 2018. The choice of medium is influenced by the topic, the location or the people involved and the respective situation and is roughly outlined in the field of objects/sculpture, installations, interventions, performance, video and photo.   


Her work has been shown in the Charlama Depot, Sarajevo (2011), SOMA, Mexico City (2013), Kunstfest Weimar (2014), Quartaire Contemporary Art Initiatives, Den Haag (2014) and in the Maxim Gorki Theater, Berlin (2015). Awards and grants such as the Benno Barth Award 2016 enable her to let her ideas run wild and to implement extensive projects in public spaces as well as in the context of an exhibition. Through the international master’s course, research stays and artist in residence programs to Brazil, Mexico, California and New York, she has an international network.   


In addition to numerous publications and exhibition catalogs in which she appears among other artists, the publications “Trasite”, “Lethe” and “on the move // ​​on the move” are devoted to individual projects and works.
