Frauke von Jaruntowski grew up in Rösrath bei Köln. She moved to Hamburg to do a teacher training course and also completed a first degree. After working for four years as a stage and costume designer in various theatre projects in Hamburg she decided to study textile design at the College of Design in Hamburg. Frauke von Jaruntowski completed the course and received her diploma in design in 1996 and, by now the mother of a little girl, went on to set up her own design studio.
Since then she has worked for many famous firms, among them Creation Baumann, Kinnasand, Nya Nordiska, Zimmer & Rohde, Rosenthal and Agrob Buchthal. Her work covers various fields. It includes researching trends, the development of exclusive ideas, devising colour and material concepts, from the drafting stage to consulting in relation to the realisation of individual projects.
Since 2014 she has worked for the company Deutsche Steinzeug AG as their exclusive artistic consultant.
At the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW), as part of the course Product Design – Textiles, together with Professor Marion Ulrich she was responsible over several years for overseeing the fashion research project “Moden-(Er)finden”. In addition, for two years here she was in charge of the teacher-training course “Technik/Textil und Bekleidung”.
At the state-recognized private university in Hamburg, Akademie Mode und Design (AMD), she was responsible for the subject of design theory.
As a founder member of the event venue Kultwerk West she curated a large number of exhibitions and events on fashion and design topics and thus contributed to the fostering of public awareness of these subjects, which in turn was incorporated into the event series CUT UP.
CUT UP is a sequence of dialogues which Frauke von Jaruntowski installed in 2015 with Bridge&Tunnel in Hamburg, in order to discuss sustainability in fashion and textile design.
In cooperation with Professor Vera Doerk, Frauke von Jaruntowski works on artistic projects which vary between media and textile art. Their common approach is the combination of textile design with media spatial presentations. In this way site-specific installations have emerged and been presented to the public in a range of contexts.
Since 2014 Frauke von Jaruntowski has been an active member of the board of trustees of Die Höge, an international foundation for women artists.
Since 2017 she has been professor of textile design at the Mozarteum University.
