Petra Music works as Senior Lecturer for Flute at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg. She teaches flute, instrumental pedagogy, didactical teaching methods, repertoire and chamber music at the Department for Music Education Innsbruck. A busy concert schedule has led her as a soloist, chamber musician and in orchestra-, new music-, and opera projects to festivals in Europe, America, Australia and Asia. Petra is also a sought after masterclass/workshop teacher for flutists of all playing abilities and levels. Regularly, she presents lectures and workshops at flute festivals and flute events. As Initiator and board member of several flute societies, she organises programs for flutists and flute teachers (e.g. Syrinx Flute Fest, Flute Symposium Innsbruck and flute clinics). She served as adjudicator for competitions and examinations (e.g. Ecole Normale de Musique Alfred Cortot/Paris, My Favourite Flute Konkurs/Moscow).
In magazines such as Flute Talk, Flöte Aktuell, Pan and Contemporary Music Review Petra has published articles relating flute teaching, repertoire and contemporary music. Her collaboration with contemporary composers has led to several (first) performances and compositions. She takes a special interest in the performance on harmony flutes such as piccolo, alto and bass flutes. Her Intensive examination with questions on historically informed performance of several musical eras has led her to the study of historical instruments. She performs as chamber- and orchestra musician with established ancient music ensembles on baroque, classical and romantic instruments.
Petra received her musical training at Kunstuniversität Graz, University of Melbourne/Australia, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign/USA, Conservatorio Dell’Abaco Verona as well as through active participation at numerous international flute festivals, masterclasses, clinics, orchestra- and opera porjects. Her studies were financially was supported by renowned institutions (e.g. Bundeskanzleramt Wien, Fohn Foundation, Yehudi Menuhin’s Live Music Now). She obtained her doctoral degree in Flute — Performance and Literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign as a student of Jonathan Keeble. During her studies, she also taught flute classes at the university and was awarded a fellowship. She completed her master degrees in flute performance and instrumental pedagogy at the Kunstuniversität Graz as a student of Dieter Flury with honors. To build a foundation for artistic research on the subject of Music and Language in Contemporary Composition, she has furthermore completed master studies in German Philology at Karl Franzens Universität Graz.
