Silke Geppert was born in Lübeck and got trained as a bookseller and publisher for art books. She has launched an art book publisher in London and curated exhibitions there. Afterwards she studied fashion and art history in Vienna. From 2001 to 2004 she has been the director of the Museum Ahrensburg. Since 2017 she is the curator for fashion, textile and carpets at the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna.

Before she was an assistant at the fashion and textile department at the University of Paderborn. She worked as a lecturer for fashion theory and fashion history at the University of Applied Arts Pforzheim and for vestimental art history at the Karl Franzens Universität Graz and the University of Salzburg. She is a curator at the Salzburg Dom Museum. 

Her research focuses on fashion and stage costume, fashion and film, fashion and religion, burgundian fashion, textile history and contemporary textile design and art. She is a member of the HRSM Research Project (Austrian Center for Fashion Research) as well as a founder of the textile and fashion network: Forum_Mode_Kostüm_Textil.
