Elke Niedermüller was born in Salzburg and received piano lessons as part of the preparatory class at the Mozarteum University Salzburg with Anton Czjzek. This was followed by studies with Peter Lang, Brian Lamport and Bernhard Ringeissen at the International Summer Academy of the Mozarteum University Salzburg. She holds degrees in instrumental and voice pedagogy (IGP) for piano, music pedagogy and awarded a degree in instrumental and voice pedagogy (IGP) for oboe, each of them with distinction. She also worked as a piano accompanist in national and international competitions such as Prima la Musica, Aeolus and Markneukirchen. During her studies she taught as an accompanist in courses at the Salzburger Blasmusikverband and Austrian Master Classes. As of 1999, she has held a lectureship for coaching in the Department of Wind Instruments at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, where she is currently working as a senior lecturer.
