University Professor in Folk Music

Thomas Nußbaumerwas born in 1966 in Hall in Tyrol. He studied musicology and German literature at the University of Innsbruck, and gained a doctoral degree in 1998. His dissertation was published under the title Alfred Quellmalz und seine Südtiroler Feldforschungen (1940-42). Eine Studie zur musikalischen Volkskunde unter dem Nationalsozialismus (Innsbruck 2001). He gained his post-doctoral qualification in 2010 from the University of Music and Performing Art in Vienna.

Thomas Nußbaumer has been working at the Innsbruck division of the University Mozarteum Salzburg in the department of musicology focusing on musical ethnology since 1995.  His main areas of research and publications are music and customs, the Fasnacht (carnival in the Alpine region), folk music and the Nazi dictatorship, the tradition of folk music in the Alpine region, in particular in western Austrian and South Tyrol, and also music of the Old Order Amish in Iowa (USA).

In November 2004, in recognition of his special achievements in the field of research into folk music, Nußbaumer was awarded the Walter Deutsch Prize set up by the Federal Ministry of Science and Research of the Republic of Austria.

In November 2012 Thomas Nußbaumer received the research prize of the Swabian-Alemannic Fasnacht, for his research on carnival customs in Tyrol and South Tyrol, in particular for his book Fasnacht in Nordtirol und Südtirol. Von Schellern, Mullern, Wudelen, Wampelern und ihren Artgenossen (Innsbruck: Löwenzahn, 2010). The prize is awarded biennially by the Cultural Foundation of the Swabian-Alemannic Fastnacht, which has close links with the Association of Swabian-Alemannic Guild of Fools.
