Herbert Böck received his first musical training as a member of the Vienna Boys Choir under Professors Grossmann and Gillesberger and made recordings of the Bach cantatas as a soprano soloist with, among others, CONCENTUS MUSICUS under Nikolaus Harnoncourt.
At the Music University in Vienna he studied conducting, oboe composition and music education.

From the start as Artistic Director of CONCENTUS VOCALIS he gained recognition and awards in international competitions, including first prize in the chamber choir category. The choir was – as the the first Austrian choir – overall winner in the European Broadcasting Union Competition in Helsinki in 1987. From 1989 to 1998 he was Artistic Director of the WIENER SINGAKADEMIE with a commitment to conduct at the Konzerthaus in Vienna. Works conducted there include the Bach Mass in B minor and the St John Passion, a series of Handel oratorios: Jephtha, Messiah, Solomon and Judas Maccabaeus, the oratorio Golgotha by Frank Martin, Honegger‘s Le Roi David, Carl Orff‘s Carmina Burana and Kagel‘s Sankt-Bach-Passion.

Since 1995 Herbert Böck has been professor of conducting for choirs and ensembles at the Mozarteum Music University in Salzburg and since 2007 has led the University’s chamber choir which he founded.

In 1998 as chief conductor of the WIENER JEUNESSE ORCHESTER (WJO), the youth symphony orchestra for the whole of Austria, he won first prize at the World Youth Music Forum in Moscow. In addition to regular concerts with them at the Musikverein and the Konzerthaus un Vienna he has conducted the WIENER JEUNESSE ORCHESTER on tours to Germany (Konzerthaus Berlin/Young Euro Classic, Kultursommer Kassel), France (Festival de la Chaise-Dieu, Paris, Verdun, Carcassonne, Sète, Italy (Gustav Mahler-Wochen in Toblach/South Tyrol, Gubbio and Vicenza), to Holland (Concertgebouw Amsterdam), Serbia (Kolarac Concert Hall, Belgrade), Turkey (Istanbul/Aya Irini, Süreyya Opera) and most recently in 2013, 2015 and 2018 to Romania (Athenaeum/Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Sinaia).

His conducting work has included collaborations with the wind ensemble of the VIENNA PHILHARMONIC, the VIENNA CHAMBER ORCHESTRA, the MOZARTEUM ORCHESTRA Salzburg, the Lower Austrian TONKÜNSTLERORCHESTER, the ORCHESTRA SANTA CECILIA DI ROMA, the ORCHESTRE PHILHARMONIQUE DE RADIO FRANCE, the SLOVENIAN PHILHARMONIE Ljubljana, the RADIO ORCHESTRA BUDAPEST, the LATVIAN NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, the WDR RADIO CHOIR COLOGNE, the MDR LEIPZIG RADIO CHOIR, the BERLIN RADIO CHOIR and the RIAS CHAMBER CHOIR BERLIN.

Debut in 1997 with the NORSKE OPERA OSLO, in 1998 with the OSLO PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA. He works regularly with both orchestras, for example on a production of Mozart‘s Zauberflöte at the Den Norske Opera Oslo and in performances of the Bach Mass in B minor with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir. In 2001 he made his debuts with the GÖTEBORG SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA and the MALMÖ SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, in 2002 with the TRONDHEIM SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, in 2004 with the STAVANGER SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. In 2007 he was invited to be guest conductor with the ORCHESTRA SINFONICA DI MILANO GIUSEPPE VERDI (Bach: St Matthew Passion). Since 2009 he has worked regularly with the ARCTIC PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA (previously the Tromsø Symphony Orchestra) in Norway (Haydn: The Creation, Bach: Easter Oratorio, Magnificat, St John Passion, Handel’s Messiah and the Mozart Requiem).
