Bachelor programme / Master programme voice

The university course in singing is divided into a Bachelor degree and three Master degrees (singing, lied and oratorio, opera and music-theatre).

The degree courses aim to provide an analysis of the entire relevant music literature including contemporary music, so as to achieve comprehensive stylistic sureness.  They aim to open up to students the abundance of musical possibilities of expression, the means of achieving this so that they can resolve musical and dramatic tasks independently and offer individual solutions as artistic personalities.

The degree courses are to be complemented by project-specific work with specially qualified conductors, stage directors and singers.

The Bachelor degree course lasts 8 semesters, comprises 141 semester hours and ends with the Bachelor examination.

In order to be eligible for the Bachelor degree course it is necessary to have passed the enrolment examination consisting of an audition, an examination of basic knowledge of general music theory and an examination of elementary piano playing. For candidates whose mother tongue is not German, an examination of their knowledge of German is also necessary.

The qualification for the Master degree has to be proven by a completed Bachelor degree in singing or an equivalent degree, as well as a supplementary examination consisting of a procedure in two stages.

During the degree course, teaching unit examinations have to be passed, and also the planned compulsory projects have to be positively assessed. The Master examination consists of an artistic or scientific Master project and a Master examination before a board at the end of the last prescribed semester.

Master Degree in Singing

The course offers training in singing combined with a special study chosen by the student.  The content of this study has to be approved at the beginning of the Master degree course by the curricular board for singing.
The Master degree course lasts four semesters, comprises 54 semester hours and ends with the Master examination.

The Master examination before a board consists of two public performances. In the first part the candidate performs a programme that he or she has chosen which is supplemented by up to 2 pieces selected by the examining board (duration 30 minutes).  The second part is made up of a recital, if possible with a programme that includes the selected special study (duration 60 minutes).
The examination programme has to contain 12 arias in a balanced and representative selection of arias from operas, oratorios and concert arias as well as 16 songs of various styles and epochs.

Master Degree in Opera and Music-theatre

The aim of the training is for the student to achieve the status of being ready to perform on stage and to be engaged as a soloist with regard to individual competitiveness in the international music and theatre business.

The Master degree lasts 4 semesters, comprises 66 semester hours and ends with the Master degree.

The Master examination before a board consists of two public performances ? an audition and a staged performance.
In the first part the candidate performs pieces of his or her own choice from his or her examination programme (duration about 20 minutes); in addition the examination senate can choose up to 2 pieces (arias or solo scenes) from the examination programme.  The examination programme consists of 5 entire specialist roles from various stylistic epochs (one of which is a role from a Mozart opera) which have to be rehearsed musically and scenically, and 10 arias or solo scenes from various stylistic epochs.
In the second part a public performance with orchestra in the context of a scenic performance is envisaged.

Master Degree in Lied and Oratorio

On this degree course the stylistically differentiated interpretation of lied and oratorio literature is developed and especially the cooperation with piano accompaniment or continuo group.

The Master degree lasts 4 semesters, comprises 50 semester hours and ends with the Master degree.

The Master examination before a board consists of two public performances.  In the first part the candidate performs pieces of his or her own choice from the examination programme (duration about 30 minutes).  The examination programme should be compiled of 30 songs from at least three different styles and epochs, and 4 roles from oratorios in different styles.  The oratorio repertoire makes up a major part of the examination.
A public song recital makes up the second part of the examination (duration about 50 minutes).
