Highlights 2015

This year the International Summer Academy of the Mozarteum Salzburg is focusing particularly on four composers:

Wolfgang RIHM is featured right from the beginning with concerts, a symposium and a course in composition;

Alexander SKRYABIN, whose significant piano music will be the subject of a competition and discussion concert in the second course period;
      Competition Alexander Skrjabin

Jean SIBELIUS and his piano and chamber music, which is still very much underestimated

and Wolfgang Amadé MOZART. As the new director of the International Summer Academy it is our declared aim, not only in 2015 but also in principle for the coming years to position his œuvre more intensively at the centre of the work of our lecturers and thus of our course participants. Peter Gülke’s conducting class and Wolfgang Brunner’s fortepiano class are examples of this new orientation which many other lecturers enthusiastically support.

Rainer Schmidt’s chamber music project which was so successful in 2014 continues this year.  In addition there will be a chamber music class held jointly by Ernst Kovacic and Peter Lang.

This year we have integrated the intensive course for highly talented participants into the Summer Academy so as to ensure greater attention.  In 2016 these courses will be offered in a different and more intensified form.

We have set up a cooperation with Innsbruck Baroque and the courses held there by organizing a concert performance as well as a workshop with some of the renowned lecturers here with us. This offer is intended especially for those who play primarily on modern instruments.

Our range of courses is complemented by master concerts in which teachers and former prize-winners make music together, by the selection academies of prize-winners presenting the best participants (performances take place in the Solitär), as well as by the academy concerts in the Wiener Saal. In addition we have the concerts in the beautiful Renaissance palace Schloss Höch in Flachau which have become a much-loved tradition; the best students of all master-classes from the three course periods will compile the programmes. Two symposia, one about Wolfgang Rihm, the other about Jean Sibelius will underline in an academic context what we are trying to achieve as artists.  Furthermore, film presentations aim to ensure that everyone involved – teachers, students as well as the visiting public – perceive the Summer Academy as a place of encounter where discussions about music and its documentation in film are highly welcome.

As in previous years, in addition to the high quality master-classes in music, classes in the Alexander Technique, yoga, German and Italian (for students of the singing and lied classes) will be offered.
