Vienna with it´s creative tensions between tradition and innovation provided the musical background in which Ernst Kovacic grew up and developed his visions of form, sound and interpretation.
With his interpretations of Bach solo sonatas, the violin concerto of Mozart and his engagement for New Music Ernst Kovacic soon established an outstanding role amongst the leading violinists of his generation.
Many composers like Krenek, Cerha, Gruber, Schwertsik, Holloway, Osborne, Eröd, Haas, Furrer, Django Bates, Jarrell,Saariaho, Zubel etc. have written works for Ernst Kovacic.
Over the last years he has – amongst others - premiered violin concertos by Beat Furrer, Django Bates and Friedrich Cerha with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta and the RSO Vienna, Rainer Bischof with City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Clemens Gadenstätters new violinconcerto with klangforum at wien modern festival, “Adonde” by Hans Zender in the Berlin Philharmony. He continued this series of premieres with a new concerto by Gérman Toro Pérez at the ISCM World Music Days in Wroclaw 2014.
As soloist of prominent orchestras in Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Australia Ernst Kovacic played under conductors like Franz Welser-Möst, Roger Norrington, Simon Rattle, Esa Pekka Salonen, Michael Gielen. He took part in the festivals of Salzburg, Vienna, Berlin, Ravenna, Edinburgh, Proms London, Ultima, Styriarte, Beethoven Festival Warsaw and Warsaw Autumn etc.
Since 2008 he tours with “Zebra- Trio”, Steve Dann, viola, and Anssi Karttunen, violoncello.
Since many years Ernst Kovacic has also worked as conductor.
From 1996 to 1998 he was artistic director of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, from 2007 to 2014 he was artistic director of “Leopoldinum Chamber Orchestra” in Wroclaw, Poland.
The list of his recordings contains violin concertos, orchestral works and chambermusic by Mozart, Beethoven, Kreisler, Sibelius, Cerha, Gruber, Holloway, Krenek, Kulenty, Janacek etc..The most recent CD presents stringorchestra versions of Alban Bergs Lyric Suite and the pianosonato op.1 with Leopoldinum Chamber Orchestra.
Amongst others he cooperated with the Scottish – Irish – English Chamber Orchestras, the Northern and Britten Sinfonia, Stuttgarter- Norwegian- and St. Paul´s Chamber Orchestras, the Klangforum Wien, ensemble modern, Camerata Salzburg and Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, BIT 20 and Esbjerg Ensemble, Ensemble Phace, Zagreb Philharmonic, Ulster Symphony, NÖ. Tonkünstler and Bruckner Orchester Linz, recreation Graz etc.
He is teaching at the University of Music in Vienna, and gives Masterclasses in many countries. Since 2007 he is curating the “brücken” - Festival in Styria and LEO Festival in Wroclaw, Poland.
Ernst Kovacic plays a violin of Giovanni Battista Guadagnini from 1753.
In line with the reorientation of the International Summer Academy focusing on the work of W. A. Mozart, participants of this master class are cordially invited to prepare at least one work by W. A. Mozart.
