Studies
Born in 1993, the Viennese Pianist Judith Valerie Engel has been studying piano performance with Prof. Pavel Gililov at the Mozarteum Salzburg since October 2010. In 2015 she finished her Bachelor’s degree with the highest distinction and is now studying for her Master. During the fall semester 2016 she was doing a semester abroad in the piano class of Teppo Koivisto at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and now continues her studies with Prof. Pavel Gililov again.


She started taking piano lessons at the age of five with Russian pianist Prof. Mag. Nina Igudesman and was awarded special sponsorship status of the Viennese Music Education Centres in 2001. Further inspiration for her piano playing came from lessons with renowned pianists like Matti Raekallio, Paul Badura Skoda and Mihaela Ursuleas. As an addition to her education Judith Valerie Engel is taking singing and conducting lessons. Just last December she performed an 18th century piano concerto both as piano soloist and conductor at the Mozarteum Salzburg.

 

Concerts and Stage-Experience
Judith Valerie Engel is playing concerts on a regular basis. She already performed in the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Musikverein Graz, the Konzerthaus Dortmund, the Russian and Hungarian Cultural Institutes and the Polish Embassy in Vienna, and the Austrian Cultural Forum London. She was invited to play at numerous charity concerts, gallery openings and poetry readings, once for example together with the hornist Prof. R. Horvath of the Viennese Philharmonic Orchestra. In August 2012 Judith Valerie Engel was invited to perform at the 28th International Chopin Festival in Gaming, Lower Austria and got asked to play at several follow-up concert organised by the International Chopin Societies in Austria and Germany. In the summer of 2015 she performed at the Beethovenfest Bonn. Furthermore some of her live recordings have been repeatedly used by Austrian, German and Dutch radio stations. In 2017 she recorded a piano concertino for a portrait CD of Salzburg-based composer A. Anglberger. Furthermore the videos on her social media channels have been viewed several thousand times. Other concert tours took her to Russia, Britain, Hungary, Finland, Italy and Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Her performances are mainly centred on her solo-repertoire, however she also regularly performs with chamber music ensembles and ‘Lied-Duos’.


Competitions and Scholarships
Judith Valerie Engel has already won various competitions. From the age of six to 16 she regularly participated in the Austrian competition “Prima La Musica” and won first prizes and special awards for both her solo and her chamber music performances. 2008 saw her win the first prize at the „International Music, Harmony and Art Festival Contest“ and 2010 the Grand Prix at the international competition “The Festival Bridges”. In 2012 she was awarded the „Yehudi Menuhin - Live Music Now” scholarship. In the fall of 2013 Judith Valerie Engel participated in the International Schubert Competition Dortmund LiedDuo and won the third prize together with Baritone Oddur Jónsson. In the fall of 2016 the two of them were finalists at the International Vocal Competition ‘s Hertogenbosch. In January 2014 she was a winner of the competition ‘Musica Juventutis’ and as a result performed in Konzerthaus Wien in March 2015. That same year she also got awarded the Richard Wagner scholarship of the Richard Wagner Verband Wien and in 2016 she was a scholarship holder of the Club Alpbach Salzburg and was thus able to attend the European Forum Alpbach 2016.
