Prof. Christoph Strehl

Christoph Strehl was born in Lübeck and studied at the Folkwang Academy in Essen with Prof. Soto Papulkas.  He took master-classes with Norman Shetler, Josef Metternich and Gianni Raimondi and in 1999 won the Alexander Girardi International Singing Competition. Besides the major Mozart tenor roles his repertoire comprises roles in operas by Britten, Handel, Rameau, Schubert, Strauss, Tchaikovsky and Wagner. In 2002 he became a member of the ensemble at Zurich Opera House.  He made his debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2003 as Don Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Giovanni conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt.  Since then Christoph Strehl has had an international career, singing in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Baden-Baden, Geneva, Hamburg, Madrid, Munich, Paris, at the Vienna State Opera, in Covent Garden and at the Met, as well as at the festivals in Aix-en-Provence and Lucerne.  At Dortmund Opera House Christoph Strehl has systematically extended his repertoire since 2011 with the roles of Eliogabalo (Cavalli), Rodolfo, Orsino (Goldschmidt’s Beatrice Cenci), Schuiski (Boris Godunov) and Nerone (Monteverdi Poppea).

In addition Christoph Strehl has given recitals with Helmut Deutsch at the Schubertiade, and has performed in concerts in Vienna (Musikverein and Konzerthaus), Munich (Gasteig and Herkulessaal), Amsterdam (Concertgebouw), Berlin (Philharmonie) and Cleveland (Severance Hall).

Christoph Strehl’s singing is documented on several CD and DVD recordings, including Die Zauberflöte (Claudio Abbado and Nikolaus Harnoncourt), Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Ivor Bolton), Fierrabras (Franz Welser-Möst) and La Finta Giardiniera (Nikolaus Harnoncourt).
