Univ.-Prof. for Stage DesignDepartment ScenographySpot On MozART
German set designer and painter Henrik Ahr first studied architecture in Leipzig and was active as a freelance artist before designing his first set designs for the Neue Szene in 2000. Shortly thereafter, he developed set designs for a stage adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's novel "Fight Club" at the Theaterhaus Jena. Most recently, Henrik Ahr staged the set design for the acclaimed production of "Katia Kabanova" (Leoš Janáček) directed by Tatjana Gürbaca at the Grand Théâtre in Geneva.
He works continuously with Tatjana Gürbaca and Christof Loy as well as with the Slovenian director Mateja Koležnik, who invited the set designer to Ljubljana for Brecht, Mann and Schönherr projects. At the Komische Oper Berlin, Henrik Ahr and Anisha Bondy premiered the fairy tale opera "The Snow Queen" by Pierangelo Valtinoni, highly praised by the critics and enthusiastically received by the audience. The new production of Philip Glass' Gandhi opera "Satyagraha" in 2017, staged by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui at the Theater Basel, a co-production with the Komische Oper in Berlin and the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp, was also a great success with press and audiences alike. Henrik Ahr has been teaching as Univ.-Prof. for stage design at the Mozarteum University and heads the department for scenography.
