Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. Gernot Gruber


Born in 1939 in Bruck an der Mur (Austrian province of Styria).

Studied music, musicology, philosophy and German literature in Graz.

1964 awarded PhD

1973 Post-doctoral studies in musicology at the University of Vienna

1976–1995 Professor with tenure at the Academy of Music in Munich (acting president of the Academy from 1987)

1995–2008 Professor with tenure at the University of Vienna


Elected member of the Academy of Mozart Research of the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation and of the Joseph Haydn Institute in Cologne (member of the board from 2008) and of the board of directors of the International Society of Musicology (until 2002); member of the board of the Ernst Krenek Institute I University of Krems (since 2008); 2004–2008 University Council of the Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg; honorary doctor of the Academy of Music and Drama in Munich (2011). 2014/2015 "observer in residence" for quality management at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg.


Professor Gruber has been a member of the philosophy and history class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 2005; until December 2012 he was chairman of the former commission of music research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences; he is the founder and director of the research project focusing on music, identity and space. In the working group "Edition and Documentation" he is the project director for the editions of the works of Brahms, Fux, Schubert and Webern, and editorial head of the Fux edition.
