13th International Mozart Competition
Voice: Repertoire requirements

Part of the artistic assessment is based on how candidates devise their programme from the competition repertoire requirements – both for registration as well as in the evaluated rounds.

In principle we recommend that participants should use urtext editions. For works by
W. A. Mozart candidates are expected to use the New Mozart Edition.

All works are to be sung in the original language and performed from memory. Where relevant the arias are to be performed with the appropriate Rezitativo accompagnato. The repertoire may not be repeated in the individual rounds. .


Preliminary round (DVD):
All works presented in the preliminary round may also be sung during the competition.

  • an aria from an opera by W. A. Mozart AND
  • an art song in German (epoch optional)


1st Round: please choose your repertoire in such a way that the overall duration of your performance comprises 15 minutes but does not exceed this.
All works are to be performed with piano accompaniment.

  • a work by W. A. Mozart
    (for instance an opera aria or a song or a concert aria or an aria from an oratorio or a mass)
  • an art song in German (epoch optional)
  • an aria chosen from a work from the Romantic period
    (for instance by A. Lortzing, C. M. v. Weber, V. Bellini, G. Rossini, G. Donizetti, G. Verdi, C. Gounod, G. Puccini, H. Berlioz, R. Wagner, R. Strauss)


2nd Round: please choose your repertoire in such a way that the overall duration of your performance comprises 20 minutes but does not exceed this.

  • an aria from an opera by W. A. Mozart (with piano accompaniment)
  • a freely chosen contemporary work, composed after 1950 (solo or with piano accompaniment)


Final Round:

  • an aria from an opera by W. A. Mozart with orchestra
  • a selection of three songs by W. A. Mozart with piano accompaniment
