The rather different piano competition

Repertoire Requirements

For pre-selection a video of maximal 15 minutes must be submitted which includes the following:
  • one work of W.A. Mozart (individual movements permitted)
  • a demanding etude
  • one work of the candidate’s choice.

Works from the pre-selection may be played again in later rounds.
The video must be recorded with only one camera and from only one perspective.
The right profile of the pianist as well as the hands on the keyboard and the feet on the pedals must be visible. Each work may be recorded individually but may not be interrupted or edited. A written statement by the recording engineer, institution or professor must be included which verifies the identity of the performer.

  • First Round (ca. 15 minutes)
    • one work of W.A. Mozart (individual movements permitted)
    • a demanding etude
    • one work of the candidate’s choice

  • Second Round (ca. 30 minutes)
    • one work of F. Schubert, F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy or C.M. von Weber
    • one or more works of the candidate’s choice

  • Third Round (ca. 60 minutes)
    • one sonata of Beethoven
    • one or more works of the candidate’s choice

Candidates are advised to use Ur-text editions. For works of W.A. Mozart candidates are expected to use the New Mozart Edition (http://www.nma.at/)

All works are to be performed by memory.
The competition direction reserves the right to interrupt a performance if it exceeds the allotted time.
